Holiday Pictures

This year when I was planning our Christmas card I was thinking of a fireplace setting with the stockings, Christmas tree and the boys. Then my friend asked me to do her pictures and what ended up happening is that she cancelled and I took her spot and ended up photographing the boys. It was a new location for me, but proved to be very valuable and geographically different and interesting.

This photo shot presented some challenges. Usually I bring Carl along to enlist his help so at least one or two images where both boys were looking, but this time I did it alone. The result is that Elliot is not looking at the camera all.day.long! So it was more about capturing the energy and mood of the boys that day and I just went with it. We can't win them all.

I started off with this outfit.

The minute I saw the picture with these jackets I HATED it so I took them off and finished up sans jacket. Which was sad because it got rid of the red pop that made these Christmas images.

Boys will be boys, especially that day.

But in the end I got something usable. Final images and card not on this blog. Usually I do one single strong image for the front of my Christmas card and I just didn't feel like I captured THAT image this year. So instead I just went for a mood and tried to capture my children's spirit in the many different forms that came out that day. Very different from what I normally create, but different is good.

This is the only image I edited for the final card that didn't make the cut.

Christmas cards arrive next week so expect them in two weeks. I try to get them out as soon as they are done for fear of getting some else off my to do list.

About Heather

My photo
I am a Los Angles based photographer and mom of 2 wonderful boys. Photography has been a passion of mine over 15 years now, ever since I picked up my first camera in journalism school and started developing my black and whites in a darkroom. The instant an affordable DSLR came out on the market in 2002, I had to have one and have been shooting digital since. Once I became a mom I realized how much I enjoy photographing children and how much better I could understand their nuances so it became a passion of mine. Their is such innocence and beauty in their pictures and I feel privileged to be a part of that. I am constantly trying new approaches and tuning my skills to create the art that is in my head, not just the art that I can create right now. I am very interested in off camera flash, and the depth and clarity it adds to my photographs. Sometimes I take breaks from my blog and photography, but it seems to never leave me completely. I always come back.
