First Official Beach Day

This week Erik has no preschool and its our first completely free week in months. Well besides a few Elliot classes that are easily skipped and some swim lessons. So I emailed my mother-in-law because she is usually up for hanging out with the boys so we could kill a day. Come to find out Carl's work randomly gave him Tuesday off so it was set, a family beach day.

I am partial to Malibu spots from my Pepperdine days and Point Dume is one of my favorites. I have a lot of great memories here, but also its a good half way point between my inlaws and us. So we all met about 11. We were anxiously watching the weather leading up to this day because Malibu is often unprectiable and we knew Ventura was cold when it was over 100 in the Valley's. It turned out to be a gorgeous day in the high 70s with hardly any clouds. The best beach day you can ask for in the warm California sun.

This day was tricky because we had kept the boys up late to watch the fireworks and they were up early instead of sleeping in. Wishful thinking on our part. Erik was in good spirits and the moment we got to the beach was itching to get out of his carseat in excitement. Poor kid had to get sunscreen on first! So here are a few of the things we did while at the beach.

Digging with Grandpa because boys like to play in dirt.

In the beginning Elliot was willing to test out the ocean and actually found it to be fun. In the beginning...

Then Erik tried to conquor the waves by pretending to be brave and then running away. This is a vast improvement over last year. He was actually going under water and laughing while doing it. This is why we'll be back this year.

Then time to put the camera away and have some family beach time. I really wish there were more photographers in my family than just me.

I would run away if I saw that wave coming at me.

Elliot breaking down at the ocean and letting us know its time to go home, but we don't want to because everyone else is having so much fun.

Erik letting us know it times to go back and have lunch in a very obvious way and then relaxing at the beach. Those waves really do have a way of calming a person.

Then to end a really fun day, we actually got to see some dolphins swim by. Interesting enough Elliot was saying "Ocean, dolphins" before we even got there. Guess he got his wish.

About Heather

My photo
I am a Los Angles based photographer and mom of 2 wonderful boys. Photography has been a passion of mine over 15 years now, ever since I picked up my first camera in journalism school and started developing my black and whites in a darkroom. The instant an affordable DSLR came out on the market in 2002, I had to have one and have been shooting digital since. Once I became a mom I realized how much I enjoy photographing children and how much better I could understand their nuances so it became a passion of mine. Their is such innocence and beauty in their pictures and I feel privileged to be a part of that. I am constantly trying new approaches and tuning my skills to create the art that is in my head, not just the art that I can create right now. I am very interested in off camera flash, and the depth and clarity it adds to my photographs. Sometimes I take breaks from my blog and photography, but it seems to never leave me completely. I always come back.
